Good range of real ales, and wonderful, great-value, unpretentious food, including omelettes made with their own free-range eggs. Very steep hill up to the car park, so make sure your handbrake’s working.

8 Hare Lane, Gloucester, GL1 5LJ
Tel: 01452 522502
There can’t be many chippies in the UK feted by Egon Ronay, but this one, housed in a 16th century Tudor building, is one of those rarities. Both a takeaway and licensed restaurant, it’s been selling chips, says owner John McGoldrick, for more than a century now. This is a Gloucester institution, serving excellent crispy fish and chips throughout the day to locals and tourists alike.
