BELL’S DINER
1 York Rd, Montpelier, BS6 5QB
Tel: 0117 924 0357, web: www.bellsdiner.co.uk

Well, where do you start? Garnering an unprecedented 15 out of 15 on Venue’s last visit, it’s no surprise that the innovative menus (born of the imagination of local uber-chef Chris Wicks) at this widely acclaimed modern bistro have deservedly garnered national approbation. Inspired by chefs such as Ferran Adria at El Bulli and Heston Blumenthal at The Fat Duck, as well as by stints cooking in Australia and travelling widely throughout Asia, the food that Chris and his team prepare reflects a very modern, sophisticated style of cooking. Now in its 23rd year, the place manages to stay cutting-edge and contemporary; a strict avoidance of commercially farmed foods results in fresh, flavoursome dishes, and the ever-evolving tasting menu is a treat you don’t want to miss. Tucked away in the heart of Montpelier, this is an unforgettable experience. It’s no surprise that Bell’s Diner was voted Best Restaurant in the South West by the Observer’s Food Monthly magazine in 2004 and 2006. Menu S: two-hour poached duck egg with iberico ham, pepper confetti and buttered soldiers; soft-shell crab with mango, avocado ice-cream and red pepper coulis. P: coconut mousse with vindaloo ice-cream and poppadom tuille; creme brulee with wild strawberry sorbet, shortbread and rhubarb compote Price ALC: from £6.50/from £15.50/from £6.50. A truly unique harbourside venture, housed in an elegant, converted warehouse and comprising a restaurant, brasserie, bar, wine bar, deli, bakery and cookery school all under one roof, courtesy of local food hero Barny Haughton. At the heart of the project is a drive to reduce food miles, reduce waste through recycling and make full use of locally sourced produce (there are tanks for rainwater harvesting and low-energy lights, and everything possible is recycled) while the daily changing menus reflect the best of what’s local and seasonal throughout the year. From wild game to fresh Cornish fish or locally reared organic lamb, these are delicious ingredients, beautifully prepared. Breakfast/brunch/light bites are available in the informal brasserie (where bar snacks start at a couple of quid and mains at around a tenner), while the restaurant offers seriously fine dining opportunities in a lively but mellow atmosphere. DELMONICO
217 Gloucester Rd, Bishopston, BS7 8NN
Tel: 0117 944 5673, web: www.delmonico.co.uk

‘Delmonico is delightful,’ said one of Venue’s professional scoffers. ‘It’s nicely sidestepped the hip or the happening, concentrating instead on important (and often overlooked) things like friendliness, efficiency and a range of nicely prepared, interesting dishes.’ Indeed, this cosy but contemporary neighbourhood cafe-bar/restaurant serves an excellent range of locally sourced, imaginatively cooked food – courtesy of chefs Tyrone Tippins and Alex Williams - from classic Anglo-French to globally influenced modern dishes and a great selection of tapas in the cafe-bar, while excellent vegetarian options, alfresco seating and early evening bargains (check the website as they change regularly, currently two courses for £11.95 before 7pm) further confirm Delmonico’s winning status. ‘Many restaurants could learn a lot from Delmonico,’ summarised our reviewer. Few, though, could replicate the gentle flamboyance of the original. Menu S: homebaked ham with a mustard crust and spicy piccalilli; beetroot, butternut squash & feta salad. M: fillet of salmon on lemon risotto; moroccan lamb casserole with pasta and feta. P: creme brulee; sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce Price ALC: from £5/from £12.95/from £5.50. Three floors of fabulously fashionable, elegant but informal eating and drinking opportunities in uniquely graceful surroundings bring seriously stylish chic to proceedings - Goldbrick House has proved its worth as one of the frontrunners on Bristol’s foodie scene. A roof terrace with a skyline view, a champagne/cocktail bar and private dining opportunities all add to the overall charm. Menus (which include breakfast/all-day brunch options) are generally modern European in style with a nod towards Mediterranean cuisine, with a few good old-fashioned British classics thrown in for good measure. ‘The food is sensational,’ our man declared, before awarding Goldbrick an impressive 14 out of a possible 15 stars, and a recent visit by this reviewer confirms that those impossibly high standards have been maintained. NEW
LIDO

Oakfield Place, Clifton, BS8 2BJ
Tel: 0117 933 9530, web: www.lidobristol.com

Opened in late 2008, the Clifton Lido comes from the company that created the 22-year-old Glassboat and sister restaurant Spyglass, so you can guarantee that the food served in this impressive spa project is something to write home about. The Victorian Lido, dating back to 1849, has undergone an extensive transformation, adding a spa, restaurant and poolside bar to the refurbished outside pool. The 90-seat restaurant, which overlooks the pool, is a destination in its own right, serving fresh, rustic food, much of it grown locally and cooked in an Italian wood-fired oven. MUD DOCK
40 The Grove, BS1 4RB
Tel: 0117 934 9734, web: www.mud-dock.com

Much-loved Bristol institution housed in a former dockside warehouse, now an uber-cool combination of bike emporium and chilled gastro hangout. A fair bit of remodelling has gone on recently, making the foodie experience even more laidback and enjoyable. Inspired industrial decor is softened by candlelight in the evenings, and a huge, south-facing sundeck with great views over the water adds to the Mud’s mellow buzz. The enormously popular £5 lunch mid-week features a freshly prepared meal and glass of wine, beer or soft drink, while the £10.95 two-course dinner makes a trip here well worthwhile. Pastries, cakes and tapas served between mealtimes. Menu dishes up ‘imaginative fare that remains reassuringly earthy’, according to Venue’s reviewer. ‘Good, tasty, unpretentious stuff that was impressive but never intimidating.’ There’s a distinct Spanish influence to the food, so expect an excellent tapas range alongside the daily specials board, a great choice of fish, superb breakfasts and popular weekend brunches. PUMP HOUSE
Merchants Rd, Hotwells
Tel: 0117 927 2229, web: www.the-pumphouse.com

Your writer absolutely loves this place - it’s everything a decent dining destination should be. The kitchen, headed up by co-owner Toby Gritten (formerly of the Albion in Clifton and Bell’s Diner), pumps out fabulous food for both the upstairs restaurant and ground-floor bar but without any gastropub pretensions. Toby’s team’s command of creative, seasonal food is sublime, and the mainly British menu is replete with traditional cuts of meat and offal which could faze the less carnivorous, but for the adventurous diner a visit is a must. The lower-level bar/kitchen provides everything from morning coffee and pastries to fast-paced, simple lunches and suppers, afternoon cakes and teas. Ingredients are sourced from local farmers and growers where possible, especially cheeses, meat and vegetables (several organically produced), and the accent is firmly on freshness and seasonality.
