‘Despite being one of Bath’s most venerable institutions, Demuths doesn’t ‘do’ laurel-resting,’ said our woman after a recent excursion to this long-established, pretty bistro which has been serving up the finest in elegant vegan and vegetarian food to the good citizens of Bath and beyond for two decades. ‘The food and decor constantly evolve, sparkling with colourful innovation,’ she declared. Goodness? You’ve got it: organics, wheat-free and vegan options abound, all both face- and fuss-free. The cosmopolitan, eclectic range of food changes regularly, a soundtrack of world music and jazz burbles quietly in the background, and it’s open all day long for excellent breakfasts, super lunches and afternoon tea before supper proper kicks in. If you like what you sample in the restaurant, Demuths run their very own cookery school (www.vegetariancookeryschool.com). Meanwhile, wannabe domestic gods and goddesses regularly peruse the tasty-looking recipes posted on the website, or collect the excellent cookbooks from the Bath green goddess herself, Rachel Demuth. ‘Tasty, satisfying posh food with a heart,’ declared our woman. Menu S: spicy marinated smoked tofu kebabs with cherry tomatoes, sweet & sour celeriac salad, red onion relish and chilli dip; sweet potato, sesame & herb falafel with coriander hummus, mint tzatziki, pitta bread, cucumber pickle.
